How do you handle client suggestions that do not aesthetically align?
Clients sometimes provide strong suggestions that may not align aesthetically with professional design principles. How do we respond? The primary approach is to listen carefully to the client, understanding their concerns and preferences fully.
Following this, designers communicate their expert design vision and ideas to the client, explaining how to achieve desired outcomes. The interaction often requires diplomacy and patience, sometimes involving subtle correction delivered with positivity (e.g. smiling).
What has entrepreneurship taught you as a business woman?
Running a design firm demands a holistic understanding of business operations, extending beyond creativity. The role of an entrepreneur in interior design is multifaceted, akin to being a driver in the "driver’s seat" responsible for all aspects of the business. Entrepreneurship in interior design demands versatile skills beyond design, including business management, client handling, and HR.
Two constants across both residential and commercial projects:
1. Adherence to the client’s budget
2. Meeting the agreed project timeline
Over 17 years’ experience in entrepreneurship leads to significant personal growth and a broadened perspective on business management, leadership and adaptability. Even with departmental support, the principal designer must maintain oversight and accountability for every business function.
