From comfort zone to confidence

It was an amazing experience to be the keynote speaker at the Student Induction Program during Deeksharambh 2026 at Jai Hind College, Mumbai. One of the key aspects discussed was moving outside your comfort zone and exploring your God given strengths.

WHY DO COLLEGE STUDENTS AVOID STEPPING OUT OF THEIR COMFORT ZONE?

1. FEAR OF FAILURE: The fear of being wrong deters many students from engaging in novel experiences

2. FEARING REJECTION: When participating in extra-curricular activities or socializing with other students in general, fear of being rejected can haunt students.

3. LOW SELF-CONFIDENCE: Students sometimes lack confidence in themselves and think that they are not good enough to deal with new situations.

THE RESULT: It limits personal growth as you miss opportunities, it weakens communication and social skills and creates a life of regret

ACTION: How can students step out of their comfort zone?

1. START WITH SMALL CHALLENGES:  One can ask a question in class, introduce themselves to a new person, or volunteer to perform any task.

2. SET PERSONAL GOALS: Make some realistic goals, such as joining one club, attending workshops, and learning a new skill every semester.

3. ACCEPT THAT MISTAKES ARE PART OF LEARNING: Failure is not an end result but rather a part of life. Every failure teaches us something new.

4. TAKE LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES: Being a leader for any project or activity will build skills related to communication, collaboration, accountability and decision-making.

5. REFLECT ON PROGRESS: Celebrate all little successes along the way and see how each new experience builds your self-confidence.

It might be hard for a college student to move out of his comfort zone, but this is precisely what makes this experience so rewarding. By experiencing something, rather than running away from it, will enable you to say: My college, my launch pad.
